February 9, 2018In South Louisiana, no one ever sits around saying, “Gosh, there’s nothing to do this weekend.” Our area is famous for it’s fairs and festivals. In fact, Louisiana has over 400 that take place year-round. We celebrate big and we celebrate often! And it’s not just the festivals, but the fundraisers and unique events in our community as well.
Here are our picks of area events to help make 2018 your best year ever:
FEBRUARY
Mardi Gras
While Mardi Gras Day is Tuesday, February 13, this year, the parades in Houma begin on Friday, February 2 with the Krewe of Hercules. Be sure to stay tuned to Gumbo for your complete Mardi Gras guide!

Choctaw Fireman’s Fair
Pass a good time at the Choctaw Fairgrounds while supporting the work of local firemen. Live music and delicious food keep the crowd happy and entertained. The kids will also have plenty to keep them entertained with carnival rides throughout the event.

Paddle Bayou Lafourche
Travel the beautiful bayou of Lafourche during this 52-mile, 4-day adventure. Paddles are treated to scenic vistas and a backyard view of the historic bayou. The route travels from Donaldsonville to Lockport.

Irish Italian Parade
Starting at Cannata’s on West Side Boulevard, this annual parade rolls through the streets of Houma, showering attendees with St. Patrick’s Day delights.

Lockport Food Festival
The Town of Lockport hosts this annual festival of good eats over the course of four days. A 5K is held on Saturday and an auction is held Friday-Sunday.

Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair
The Thibodaux Fire Department hosts this annual fundraising fair to provide entertainment to the community while also supporting its volunteer firefighters. The fair includes a parade, a 5K, an auction, and a raffle at the end of the fair. Delicious food, carnival rides and live music abound.

JUNE
Cajun Heritage Festival
Experience the delicate art of decoy making and more at this festival. Enjoy a decoy contest, a duck calling contests and a live decoy auction. Throughout the weekend, enjoy historic exhibits, boat building, Cajun food, and more.

Louisiana Catfish Festival
Founded in 1975 by Rev. William McCallion to raise money for the church, this always-popular event celebrates the gem of local waters. Dubbed Catfish Capital of the Universe, the weekend event boasts a jam-packed music lineup as well as festival staples like fair rides, children’s activities, crafts, loads of food and more.

Bon Mange Festival
The name, French for “good eats”, says it all. Founded in the 1970s as a way to bring together the small Lafourche Parish community under one roof, the festival has blossomed. Copious amounts uf Cajun favorites including seafood, gumbo, grillades and more are served throughout the festival and carnival rides, live music and children’s activities keep attendees busy all weekend.

Houma Independence Celebration
Terrebonne Patriots, Inc. sponsors this annual Independence Day celebration to benefit to continuation of the event and the Wounded Veterans Fishing Rodeo. The event includes music, food and craft booths, kid’s activities, military equipment on display and fireworks.

Let Freedom Ring Festival
This annual July 4th event is a family-friendly way to celebrate the holiday. The park opens at noon and guests are invited to bring their picnic baskets, lawn chairs and BBQ pits. Live entertainment is provided, as well as a fireworks display.

Golden Meadow Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo
Cast a line at this annual fishing blowout. This family-friendly event features a weekend-long fishing rodeo and lots of live entertainment.
