January 19, 2012The assistant director of Tufts University’s Center for Reading and Language Research will deliver the keynote address Jan. 28 at Nicholls State University’s fourth annual conference on dyslexia and related learning disorders.
Parents, guidance counselors, tutors, teachers and anyone else interested in raising their awareness of dyslexia are invited to the conference, which will be held at the Bollinger Memorial Student Union on the Nicholls campus.
Registration is $60 per attendee until Jan. 25, and $65 in the three days leading up to the event. Full-time college students will be admitted for $25, and on-site registration is available.
Stephanie Gottwald, the keynote speaker, holds a master’s degree in linguistics and is completing a doctorate program in language and literacy.
Gottwald has authored several research articles on reading and reading disabilities and has conducted workshops on reading fluency instruction and assessment and reading disabilities for educators across the country.
At the conference, Gottwald will present “Research Based Reading Fluency Approaches in the Classroom.” She will present lesson plans to that end and discuss mechanisms that can be immediately introduced in the classroom.
The conference is split into three sessions and will run from 10 a.m. until 3:15 p.m.
Attendees will choose one topic each session to listen. Some topics include: “Assistive Technology,” “Walk a Mile in My Shoes,” “How to Read Big Words,” and “Decoding Surveys.”
The Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders at Nicholls is hosting the conference, sponsored by the Giardina Family Foundation and Sopris Learning.
Several presenters associated with the state center for dyslexia will address the audience.
