American Legion Post 31 is accepting nominations for Terrebonne’s Outstanding Teenager of the Year for 2007.

In all, 24 nominees will be accepted from the parish’s six high schools. The outstanding teen will be recognized for his or her volunteer services over the last year at school, church and in the community.

Nominees must be at least 15 years old, and no older than age 19 by Dec. 31. The student must have lived in Terrebonne Parish for one year.

Each high school may nominate at least four students for the award. Schools will be asked to certify nominees’ academic data and activities and services rendered.

A panel of commanders and past commanders from the four area American Legion Posts will make the final selection.

The 24 nominees, their parents and school officials will be dinner guests at a special ceremony at the Lenox Hotard Post on Jan. 12, 2008.

The dinner program, which will begin at 7 p.m., will recognize the 24 high school students nominated for their volunteer services. Tickets for the event are $15, and are available at the high schools or by calling (985) 872-6432.

Martin Folse, owner of HTV, will serve as guest speaker. He will be joined by representatives of the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce, South Central Industrial Association, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government and Terrebonne Parish School Board.

The American Legion presented its first Outstanding Teenager of the Year award in 1957 to Leo Hebert Jr. Today, Hebert is a practicing physician.

Last year’s recipient was Channing Deroche of South Terrebonne High School.
